2022 SCP VP For Communication Candidate Statement on APA Ballot

Question: How would your skills and vision help you to contribute to and lead SCP’s efforts to uproot anti-Black racism in SCP and beyond?

If elected the VP for Communication, I believe that my values, skills, and vision will complement SCP efforts to uproot anti-Black racism. Specifically, my personal experiences, scholarly contributions, and clinical work allow for me to bring a unique perspective to conversations pertaining to anti-Black racism. I am acutely aware of issues related to social justice, advocacy, and oppression, and am intentional about centering Black voices is both my personal and professional practice.

I value equity and have shown a commitment to confronting anti-Black racism throughout graduate school, and as an early career psychologist. During graduate school, my identity as a counseling psychologist and my commitment to social justice and advocacy led me, along with other students in my department, to establish the Committee of Social Justice and Inclusion (CSJI). My commitment to social justice and inclusion has not waned, it has only strengthened. I currently work to use the skills I’ve obtained from the CSJI to dismantle oppression and make systemic changes on a professional level. I have had practice using my voice and actions to make institutional changes, and work to continue to make contributions to the field.

It is imperative to acknowledge and recognize when systems and practices reinforce beliefs, attitudes, prejudice, and oppression towards people of Black/African descent. I envision centering Black voices and using my own to connect, collaborate, and coordinate efforts towards uprooting anti-Black racism and creating a more just and equitable world, in line with our SCP mission.

Question: How would your skills and vision help you to contribute to and lead SCP’s efforts to uproot anti-Black racism in SCP and beyond?

As VP for Communication, I see it as my responsibility to ensure that the messaging and media presence of the division directly aligns with its mission of promoting inclusion and uprooting anti-Black racism. That said, in this role I will: Ensure the division's website and online presence is representative of the diversity of the division and its mission; Facilitate timely communication from the division to its members and the broader community, especially as it relates to current events related to diversity, inclusion, and equity for marginalized persons; Use media as a way to relay information and educate the broader counseling psychology community on issues related to diversity, inclusion, and anti-Black racism.

In the completion of this work, I bring my expertise centered on the experiences of Black Americans, in particular women, as well as a history of leadership within the American Psychological Association (Divisions 35 and 45) and the Association of Black Psychologists. My expertise and leadership experiences have contributed to my unique understanding of the interplay between race/racism and gender/sexism, as well as my various leadership skills which include, relationship building and collaboration, website design, and the ability to use technology and media creatively to communicate to wide audiences.
