2022 SCP Election Statement for Communication Candidate Statement:

Monica J. Johnson, Ph.D.

I am honored to be considered for VP for Communication. I am currently an Adjunct Professor at SUNY University at Buffalo and am a Staff Psychologist at Princeton University. Multiculturalism is foundational to my teaching and clinical practice, as is centering marginalized voices and addressing systemic oppression. I focus on social justice, advocacy, paying particular attention to clinical and contextual issues impacting Black women.

I have participated in several leadership initiatives within SCP. Specifically, I was a 2018 Graduate Student Participant in the Leadership Collaborative and am currently the SCP Leadership Development Institute Fellow. I have served as a member of the Liberation Lounge Committee and am currently co-chairing the committee for the upcoming APA Convention. My engagement in these committees and leadership initiatives have helped prepare me for this role.

Communication is vital to transforming and growing our professional home. It is imperative to reach division members by continuing to adapt to the technological advancements that allow for us to reduce barriers, increase access to information, and help develop connections, relationships, and community. My goals in this position would be to utilize various communications vehicles (listservs, SCP Connect, Webinars, and social media) to connect, collaborate, and coordinate efforts towards creating a more just and equitable world, in line with our SCP mission.

I am thankful for the mentorship and training opportunities that I received from SCP and hope to bring my perspective and experiences to the Executive Board and join our divisional commitment to social justice and anti-Black racism.
