Incoming co-chairs Lisa De La Rue and Theo Burnes on behalf of the SCP Awards and Recognition Committee, request nominations for the BARBARA A. KIRK AWARD and the DONALD E. SUPER FELLOWSHIP. Deadline is March 20, 2023.

As a general practice, late submissions will not be reviewed. However, please reach out to the co-chairs if there are extenuating circumstances that you believe we should consider for a late submission.  Impacts of the pandemic and ongoing work and survival of the sociopolitical climate will be honored with consideration.

Members of the Division 17 Awards and Recognition Committee and members of the Executive Board may make nominations. However, if they do so, they must withdraw from the voting process related to any nominee for whom they have written a letter of support. Announcement of all award winners is made at the annual APA Convention (all award recipients are notified confidentially prior to the convention). Current members of the Division 17 Executive Board are not eligible for these awards during their term of office.

  • Nomination materials must be combined into one PDF document titled with nominee’s name and award name. For example, “Linda Jackson SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARD.pdf”. Submissions that are not in one PDF will not be reviewed. Nominations that are incomplete or that include more materials than required (more than one letter, for instance) will not be reviewed.
  • Submit only one nomination per form. Emailed, faxed or mailed submissions will not be accepted. (If you don’t have access to the internet, please work with a colleague who does). Late submissions will not be accepted.

BARBARA A. KIRK AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH

The Barbara A. Kirk Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Research is given for outstanding graduate student research in counseling psychology. The Award and its associated monetary prize were initiated and funded by Dr. John Black, CEO, of Consulting Psychologists Press; it is now funded by the Society/Division 17. Announcement of the Award winner is made at the annual APA convention. The procedures to be followed in the nomination of candidates, selection of an Award winner, and presentation of the Award are detailed below.

CRITERIA:

  1. The Barbara A. Kirk Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Research is given for outstanding graduate student research in counseling psychology. The piece of research submitted must be in an area that falls under the purview of counseling psychology. It must have been conducted while the student was enrolled in a graduate program. The student must be the principal author of the research. Both qualitative and quantitative research projects are eligible for this award.
  2. Nominees must be either: a) students currently enrolled in a counseling psychology program, or b) new professionals (no more than one year post-degree) submitting research that was conducted while they were counseling psychology graduate students. Nominees must be members of Student Affiliates of Seventeen (SAS) (new professionals should have been members of SAS at the time the research was conducted).
  3. No voting members of the Executive Board of the Society/Division 17 shall be eligible to be nominated for the Barbara A. Kirk Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Research during the time they serve on the Board.
  4. In the case of a tie, two awards may be given, splitting the monetary award.
  5. Though the Award ordinarily would be voted on annually, the Executive Board may elect not to make an Award in any given year.

 PROCEDURE:

  1. Students will submit a full length APA-style article (as one would submit for publication) or an 1800 word summary (identical to APA convention proposals) for consideration. An accompanying letter of nomination (self or other) should discuss how the submitted piece of research meets the criteria for the award and should include the name, address, program and institutional affiliation, and SAS membership status of the nominee. The letter should also include a 500-1000 word summary on how the nominee’s research interests align with and/or apply to counseling psychology, particularly as it relates to counseling psychology’s focus on Anti-Black Racism, Liberation, Advocacy, Engagement. A nominee’s CV should also be included. 
  2. Representatives of the Student Affiliates of Seventeen will serve as ex-officio members of the Society/Division 17 Awards and Recognition Committee for purposes of ranking the Award nominees. Such representatives will have one vote collectively.
  3. The Co-Chairs of the Awards and Recognition Committee (or the Chairs’ designee) will be responsible for collecting nominations and for obtaining evaluations of the nominations from the Committee. All reviewers will be given a rating form on which they are to rate the research (using a five point scale) on: (a) appropriateness of focus for counseling psychology, (b) methodology, (c) originality, (d) contribution to the literature, and (e) overall evaluation. Each reviewer will rate and then rank the submission and send both ratings and rankings to the Co-Chairs (or the Chairs’ designee) who will then compute mean ratings. Based on these mean ratings the Co-Chairs will submit a rank ordered list of nominees to the Society/Division 17 Executive Board for a vote.

DONALD E. SUPER FELLOWSHIP FOR THE SUPPORT OF DISSERTATION RESEARCH ON CAREER DEVELOPMENT

The Donald E. Super Fellowship is given for the support of dissertation research on a topic related to career development. The Donald E. Super Fellowship was established in honor of the late Donald E. Super and funded by Consulting Psychologists Press; it is now funded by the Society/Division 17. Announcement of the Award winner is made at the annual APA convention. The procedures to be followed in the nomination of candidates, selection of an Award winner, and presentation of the Award are detailed below.

CRITERIA:

  1. The Donald E. Super Fellowship is given for the support of dissertation research on a topic related to career development. The Donald E. Super Fellowship award will be based on the quality of the dissertation proposal and its potential for advancing our knowledge in the area of career development. Both qualitative and quantitative research projects are eligible for this award.
  2. Nominees must be doctoral students enrolled in a counseling psychology program. Nominees must be current members of SAS. The students must have already proposed, but not completed, the dissertation.
  3. Although Donald E. Super Fellowship recipients may use the Award to cover expenses already incurred, the anticipated dissertation defense date should not fall before the award date (i.e., should not fall before June 1st of the year of application for the Award, which is the date by which the Executive Board will announce its decision).
  4. No voting members of the Executive Board of the Society/Division 17 shall be eligible to be nominated for the Donald E. Super Fellowship during the time they serve on the Board.
  5. In the case of a tie, two awards may be given, splitting the monetary award.

One copy of the dissertation proposal (or an abstract of the proposal, neither to exceed 30 pages of text inclusive of title page, proposal text, references and tables/figures), signed by the dissertation committee members indicating their approval of the proposal, must be submitted along with the letter of nomination. The letter of nomination (written by self or other) 1) should discuss how the submitted proposal meets the criteria for the award; 2) should include the name, address, program and institutional affiliation, and SAS membership status of the nominee; and 3) should indicate the anticipated completion date of the dissertation (i.e., the date the final dissertation is approved by the doctoral committee). A nominee’s CV should also be included.
