Welcome!

We are the Section for Advocacy of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity (SASOGD), and we gladly welcome you here!

SASOGD is a section of the APA Division 17. We are committed to working toward LGBTQ+ equity. Please contact us if you would like to become involved and consider running for a leadership position!

Our Mission Statement

Our mission is to promote awareness of sexual orientation and gender diversity that impact counseling psychology research, scholarship, practice, training, advocacy, and acts of social justice and to support the professional development of lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer (LGBQ+) and transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse (TNG) psychologists and students.

Our Goals

Create a community of counseling psychologists and trainees interested in lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer (LGBQ+) and transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse (TNG) related topics.

Encourage effective and ethically sound counseling psychology research scholarship, practice, training, leadership, and advocacy and social justice related to sexual and gender diverse individuals.

Provide opportunities for professional development and mentoring across the career span for lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer (LGBQ+) and transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse (TNG) students and professionals and allies with interests in LGBQ+ and TNG populations.

Create partnerships with other divisional groups, particularly those addressing social justice, to encourage and facilitate the use of our work as psychologists as a tool for (to) eliminating oppression in the Division and in counseling psychology in general.
