I am a first-generation academic and child of Colombian immigrants who taught me about the strength of immigrant communities. Training in counseling psychology provided me with the vocabulary and values to forge my path as a counseling center psychologist, faculty member, and administrator. My leadership journey began as chair of SERD, and includes being a cofounder, past president, and elder of the National Latinx Psychological Association. After having taken some years away from APA and SCP, I reconnected
with SCP last summer in Seattle.

I spent my career challenging oppression and creating structures to empower counseling psychology trainees to overcome barriers. I mentored 54+ doctoral students who are diverse across the spectrum of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and ability. My work extends beyond academic spaces; with my students and community partners, I created a community-based Spanish language free clinic to promote liberation for clients and provided significant training and leadership for trainees. My work is dedicated to uprooting intersectional oppression, colonialism and anti-Black racism in the community, in higher education, and in particular the Latinx community where 25% of US Latinx people are Afrodescendiente.

My goals for SCP are three-fold. First, to highlight the issues facing Latinx communities, particularly immigration-related issues, and implications for counseling psychology practice, training, and research. My second goal is to focus on threats to the future of counseling psychology, like the enrollment cliff in higher education. Finally, I will focus on the recruitment and retention of members to SCP with a keen eye to who is not at the table.
