Division 17 Awards Pre-Call for Nominations (2022-2023)

The Awards and Recognition Committee of Division 17 announces that there will be a formal Call for Nominations for eight professional awards and two student awards from the Society/Division in the fall issue of the Division 17 Newsletter. Details regarding procedures will appear in the Newsletter. This advanced call is intended to highlight the awards and bring attention to the deadlines for nominations.

Professional Awards (deadline for nominations is January 15, 2023)

The Leona Tyler Award, the highest award given by Division 17, is given to stimulate and reward research or professional achievement in Counseling Psychology. It is supported by generous contributions from John Holland and John D. Black.

The John D. Black Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Practice of Counseling Psychology is given to stimulate and reward outstanding achievement in the practice of Counseling Psychology. This award is supported by Consulting Psychologists Press, Inc.

The Dorothy Booz Black Award for Outstanding Achievement in Counseling Health Psychology is given to encourage and reward outstanding research and practice in counseling health psychology. The award is supported by Consulting Psychologists Press, Inc.

The John Holland Award for Outstanding Achievement in Career and Personality Research is given for notable research on career and personality topics. This award is for mid-level professionals. This award is supported by Psychological Assessment Resources, Inc.

The Fritz & Linn Kuder Early Career Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions to Counseling Psychology was established to honor early career achievement in scientific contributions to Counseling Psychology. The recipients must have received the doctorate within the last 10 years.

The Early Career Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Counseling Psychology was established to honor distinguished professional contributions by an early career psychologist (ECP) to Counseling Psychology. Recipients of the Award should have an established record of the practice of and leadership in counseling psychology. The recipient must have received the doctorate degree within ten years prior to receiving the Award.

The Social Justice Award is given to reward sustained commitment to the specialty, to community involvement, to recognizing diversity, and to demonstrating evidence of achieving community or organizational change that supports disenfranchised, disempowered, less privileged, or oppressed groups and has a larger impact on practice, research, and scholarship in the field.

The Derald Wing Sue Award for Distinguished Contributions to Multicultural Counseling was established to honor distinguished contributions to multicultural counseling. Recipients of the Award should have an established record of scientific or professional contributions to the research or practice of multicultural counseling. The Award should be given to persons whose principal professional identification is as a Counseling Psychologist and are members of the Society/Division 17. The recipient must have received the doctorate degree more than 20 years prior to receiving the Award, i.e., the recipient must be mid-career or above.

The Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award acknowledges career contributions to Counseling Psychology via excellence in mentoring. This award is for professionals who have provided mentoring throughout their careers. The award and its associated monetary prize is voted annually by the Society/Division 17 Executive Board at its mid-year meeting. Announcement of the Award winner is made at the annual APA convention.

Student Awards (due March 1, 2023)

The Barbara A. Kirk Award is presented in recognition of outstanding student-initiated research (dissertation or other). The award was established to honor the late Barbara A. Kirk. The research must have been produced by a graduate student as lead author and while enrolled in a counseling psychology program. Nominees must be members of SAS (new professionals should have been members of SAS at the time the research was conducted). The deadline is March 1.

The Donald E. Super Fellowship is awarded to support dissertation research on a topic related to career development. This award is funded by Consulting Psychologists Press, Inc. Only doctoral students enrolled in a counseling psychology program who have an approved dissertation proposal and have not yet held their final exam/defense are eligible. Nominees must be members of SAS (new professionals should have been members of SAS at the time the research was conducted). The deadline is March 1.
