2020 SCP Leadership Collaborative (LC) – Call for LC Fellow Applications

The Society of Counseling Psychology (SCP) Leadership Collaborative (LC), formerly known as the Leadership Academy, is designed to inspire, recruit, and train future leaders in counseling psychology.  Participants will attend a leadership training program, receive mentoring, and complete a leadership project related to current LC initiatives and the SCP strategic plan.  In conjunction with the 2020 SCP Midyear Executive Board Meeting to be held in New Orleans, the SCP Leadership Collaborative (March 31-April 2, 2020) will focus on developing leadership potential in broadly defined multicultural and global contexts.  Leadership projects will be presented at the 2020 American Psychological Association (APA) Annual Convention in Washington, DC.  We expect Fellows of the Leadership Collaborative to commit to future service on SCP committees and Sections, as elected officers in SCP, and as leaders in a variety of positions in APA, their places of employment, and society at large. We invite counseling psychology master’s students, counseling psychology doctoral students, early career psychologists, and early career masters-level professionals (10 years or less since degree) who are interested in and committed to leadership in the Society of Counseling Psychology (Division 17) to apply for the 2020 SCP Leadership Collaborative.

The Leadership Collaborative is designed for individuals who are interested in leadership but have not yet held major leadership positions in SCP, SAS, APA, or APAGS.

With its focus on training a diverse group of students and ECPs, the Leadership Collaborative will help develop the next generation of SCP leaders and contribute to the future of counseling psychology.  By pairing future society leaders with past and current leaders, the Leadership Collaborative hopes to create opportunities for students and ECPs to take the next steps toward leadership in counseling psychology.

Components of the Leadership Collaborative training 

  1. Participate in the leadership training from March 31-April 2, 2020 concurrent with the 2020 SCP Executive Board (EB) Midyear Meeting and immediately preceding the 2020 Counseling Psychology Conference in New Orleans.
  2. Participate in joint activities with the SCP Executive Board (EB).
  3. Design and conduct a project that contributes to SCP. Projects should focus on an LC initiative or be tied to the SCP strategic plan and will be developed with the help of a SCP Project Mentor.  Projects are to be completed by the 2020 APA convention in Washington, D.C. and be presented there.
  4. While creating and conducting the LC project, Fellows are expected to become a member of a working group (e.g., Committee, Section, Special Interest Groups) within Division 17.
  5. Reconvene with the Leadership Collaborative for a half-day leadership training concurrent with the SCP Annual Executive Board meeting before the 2020 APA Convention in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, August 5th.
  6. Participate in LC leadership activities and SCP events at the 2020 APA Convention including presentation of your LC Project.

Learning Outcomes

The Leadership Collaborative is designed to help participants:

  • Understand the structure and function of leadership positions in SCP and APA;
  • Assess one’s own leadership style and potential in a multicultural context;
  • Observe SCP Executive Board engaging in leadership activities;
  • Observe and participate in leadership activities in a SCP working group;
  • Conceptualize, develop and complete an LC project to be presented at the 2020 APA convention;
  • Network and develop working relationships with SCP leaders;
  • Identify a path to leadership within SCP and seek/obtain a leadership position;
  • Understand basic APA governance and pathways to Fellow status in SCP.

Criteria for Participation

The Leadership Collaborative Committee is seeking a diverse group of students and ECPs who meet the following criteria:

  • Currently a student enrolled in a counseling/counseling psychology master’s or doctoral program, or an early career counseling professional or psychologist  (completion of a master’s degree or doctoral degree within the last 10 years);
  • A current, paid member of SCP or SAS, as of the date of the application;
  • Committed to making a professional impact through leadership in a multicultural context (i.e., leadership situated in understanding one’s own multiple intersecting identities and how power, privilege and oppression affect psychology, U.S. society and our global world);
  • Interested in pursuing leadership positions in SCP;
  • Notyet held an elected position in SCP or SAS, chaired a SCP committee, served in APA governance or an elected position in APAGS.
  • Available and able to attend two leadership training sessions with the funding limits noted:
    • Two and 1/2 day leadership training that will occur in conjunction with SCP Midyear Executive Board Meeting (March 31-April 2, 2020).  Each participant will be reimbursed for travel and lodging expenses to attend the Midyear LC training.  Acceptable travel expenses include coach airfare, double room (shared) hotel accommodations, meals, and ground transportation congruent with APA travel policy;
    • An additional Leadership Collaborative training  that will take place on Wednesday, August 5th immediately prior to the APA Convention. Fellows are expected to attend the 2020 APA Convention to present their completed leadership project and engage in SCP activities.  A small travel advance up to $500 will be made available to LC Fellows to augment attendance at the APA Convention.  However, please note: you will be expected to cover all other expenses incurred to attend the APA Convention.

Application Procedures

To apply for the Leadership Collaborative, submit the following materials in a single PDF attachment to Debbie Nolan at leadershipcollaborative@div17.org by December 16, 2019.  Materials will only be accepted via email.  The file name should be your last name and your status as either a student or an ECP (e.g. “ManeseECP.pdf” or “LiuStudent.pdf”).

  • A letter of interest—no more than two pages single-spaced.  Provide information about yourself and your professional identity as a counseling psychologist or counseling professional or student in counseling psychology.  Briefly discuss current/previous leadership experiences you have had andwhat you learned from them, particularly as they relate to addressing diversity issues in SCP.  Please discuss why you would like to participate in the Leadership Collaborative, what you hope to gain, and how you would see yourself utilizing the Leadership Collaborative experience in your future work as a leader in SCP, including specific SCP leadership roles of future interest.
  • A current curriculum vita.
  • ONE letter of recommendation which addresses your potential as a leader in SCP, your interpersonal skills, and your ability to complete projects. If you are a student, please have a faculty member or supervisor write this letter on your behalf.  If you are an ECP, this letter could be written by a supervisor, colleague, or mentor.
