Introduction from the SCP Program Chairs

We are thrilled to present the Society of Counseling Psychology (SCP) program for the 2019 American Psychological Association Convention in Chicago! As you will see, the program provides a diverse representation of the amazing work conducted by our talented colleagues from across the field of counseling psychology and beyond!

This year, President Ruth Fassinger has developed two Presidential Initiatives that honor the social justice mission of SCP and two of SCP’s exemplary social justice advocates: The Susan L. Morrow Symposium on Social Justice: When Concerns Collide: Toward an Ethics of Social Justice (Friday, August 9 at 9:00 AM) and the Rosie Phillips Davis Symposium on Deep Poverty: Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Low Income and Economically Marginalized Individuals (Friday, August 9 at 10:00 AM).

The program also includes the Leona Tyler Award Address by Fred Leong, the Best in Science and Best in Practice Awards Addresses (by Helen Neville and Christopher Mackowiack, respectively), the Fellows Addresses (by Mary Ann Covey, Jill Lee-Barber, Debra Mollen, Barbara Palombi, and Saundra Tomlinson-Clarke ), the Students of Seventeen Program (entitled: Graduate Student Unionization – A Real Discussion about Creating Graduate Student Equity), a program by the Leadership Collaborative (formerly the Leadership Academy), the annual Section Roundtables and a new Open House for Section and Special Interest Groups, 38 additional symposia (16 of which are CE eligible), five poster sessions, and (last but not least) three social hours!

We thank all those who submitted proposals and served as reviewers who helped create this timely and intellectually stimulating program. Please note that changes to days, times, and locations (while, hopefully, unlikely) are still possible, so please check the official APA Convention Program to ensure that you have the most up-to-date information possible.

We hope you have a wonderful time learning, networking, and catching up with friends, students, and colleagues in Chicago!

Respectfully,

Patrick Grzanka (pgrzanka@div17.org) and Joe Miles (jmiles@div17.org)

Using the APA Convention Smartphone App for SCP Programming

All official programming for Division 17 and all other divisions can be browsed and saved to your personal schedule via the APA Convention App*, available for Android and iPhone.  A web browser version of the Convention App compatible with Windows operating systems is also available.  The webmanager highly recommends trying out the App if you have a smartphone, but don’t forget that the App does not list SCP Hospitality Suite programming… please consult the SCP @ 2019 APA Convention Programming Guide  for that programming information.

*The webmanager recommends opening the App, clicking on the “Sessions” icon, then selecting the following hierarchical menu item sequence to surf D17 programming by day: Browse by Division –> SponsorDiv –> Browse by Sub-Track –> 17.  Click the “star” icon to save any and all interesting sessions to “My Schedule”, which you can later access from the home screen of the App.  Please note that the hierarchical menu can lead you to dead-ends due to poor programming, so use the hierarchical menu sequence listed above for D17 sponsored programming.  If you want to search all official Convention programming by day, click on the “session” icon, then select “Browse by Day”.
