Accredited Counseling Programs in Canada: There are four accredited counseling psychology Ph.D. programs in Canada. These Ph.D. programs are accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA). Some of them are also accredited by the American Psychological association (APA). CPA and APA are now coming to a new agreement, however, that APA will no longer accredit or renew accreditation for programs in Canada. Accreditation of Master’s level programs is not yet wide spread in Canada as it is in the U.S. Below is a list of accredited Ph.D. level counseling programs.

Internships: Center for International Career Development (CICD)This nonprofit organization provides J-1 visa sponsorship for international students who have at least 2 years of study or practical experience in a given subject field plus foreign language abilities and have secured their own US internship or also tries to place international students.

International Counseling Psychology Conference

International Union of Psychological Sciences (IUPsyS)
“The International Union for Psychological Science (IUPsyS) serves to build global interaction among research communities and promote advances in psychological science and technology at the international level.” It allows access to the National Academies Press reports in various languages and also provides information resources of the National Academies Press reports specifically for international students.

IACCP-International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology
The purpose of the IACCP is to facilitate communication among persons interested in a diverse range of issues involving the intersection of culture and psychology. IACCP is affiliated with the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS). This website provides internet links to associations/organizations, journals, and other resources related to cross-cultural psychology.

IAAP Counseling Psychology Division
The IAAP Counseling Psychology Division is a network of counseling psychologists from all over the world to allow the sharing of ideas, resources, support, and collaboration in promoting an international perspective in Counseling Psychology. It offers a Division Newsletter, Award program, Special Projects, and Divisional programming for the International Congress of Applied Psychology (ICAP). This website also provides job-related information for international students.

ICP: International Council of Psychologists“The purpose of ICP is to advance psychology and the application of its scientific findings throughout the world. To this end, ICP seeks to strengthen international bonds between psychologists and to widen, deepen, and clarify channels of communication between individual psychologists.” This organization provides a number of opportunities for international students, including (a) presentation of the research findings at the ICP conferences (Note: You do not have to go to the conference: you can present your study at the in-absentia poster session and win a prize!), (b) establishing connections with other psychologist from all over the world.

Minnesota International Counseling Institute
“The Minnesota International Counseling Institute (MICI) has been held every two years since 1989, with the goal of bringing together individuals from different regions of the world to promote the cross-cultural exchange of theories, techniques, and research about the counseling, psychology, and education professions. Designed primarily for those involved in counseling practice, training, supervision, and/or research, the institute offers participants an intensive learning experience with international colleagues. Enrollment is limited to maximize the cross-cultural exchange of practices and ideas. The institute will be conducted in the English language.” In 2005 the institute will be held on August 10-16.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
Through a network of local offices, Application Support Centers, Service Centers, local area immigration services field offices, National Customer Service Call (NCSC) Centers, Forms Centers, and the Internet, USCIS processes all immigrant and non-immigrant benefits provided to visitors of the United States.

International Student Immigration Issues
Provide useful information concerning international students, including “how to

This book assists pre-doctoral students in psychology to navigate through the internship application process by providing instructions for ranking internship sites, writing essays, interviewing, and also finding positions through the APPIC internship clearing house. Helpful resources such as checklists, essay examples and cover letters are included.

The book and website provide an overview to prepare for the predoctoral internship. Information on calculating hours, putting together Curriculum Vitae, writing the essays, preparing the APPIC application, and preparing for interviews is provided. Although the authors targeted clinical psychology students as their audience, the information can be applicable to counseling students who plan to apply for predoctoral internships.
