Iowa State University: Assistant Professor

Assistant Professor in Psychology and African American Studies

The Psychology Department and the African American Studies Program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) at Iowa State University invite applications for the position of assistant professor. Although this is a multidisciplinary search (Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Psychology, Psychology, and Sociology), the department hopes that the position will be filled by a psychologist, in which case the appointment would be in both African American Studies and the Department of Psychology.  The Department of Psychology has three training areas:  social psychology, counseling psychology, and cognitive psychology.  The successful candidate would affiliate with one or more of these areas and with the African American Studies program.

A new faculty member in the Psychology Department and African American Studies Program will sustain an active program of scholarship in their area of specialization and teach courses and mentor students in both the program and the department. The successful psychology candidate will have a Ph.D. in psychology by the beginning date for the appointment (August 16, 2008), possess expertise in a substantive area of psychology and African American Studies, and demonstrate the potential to achieve excellence in scholarship and teaching.

A research-friendly teaching load involving graduate and undergraduate instruction creates a favorable situation for a productive career in our supportive and growing psychology department. Additional research and grant opportunities are available through affiliation with a variety of interdisciplinary institutes and centers (e.g., the Institute for Social and Behavioral Research, which houses the largest longitudinal study of African American families in the nation) and a variety of interdepartmental graduate programs (e.g., , Gerontology, Linguistics, Neuroscience, and Human Computer Interaction). The department is also conducting searches in cognitive and social psychology and is participating in searches for faculty in Human Computer Interaction and in the Asian American Studies Program (see Ads on the Department of Psychology website).

Successful candidates are expected to have a record of excellence in research and teaching and will be expected to maintain a highly productive program of research with the potential of securing extramural funding. The salary is competitive and generous start-up funds are available. Newly acquired laboratory space has greatly expanded the department’s research infrastructure.  Ames, Iowa has excellent public schools and is consistently rated as one of the best small cities to live and work.

Review of applications will begin on October 31, 2007 and continue until the position is filled. Applicants should (1) arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to ISU and (2) submit the following application materials: (a) a letter of application including statements of teaching philosophy and research interests, (b) a curriculum vitae, (c) samples of recent publications or creative work, and (d) a summary of graduate courses completed that are relevant to African American studies. Application materials should be forwarded to: Cindy Bartleson, Attn. African American Studies Program, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, 202 Catt Hall, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50011-1050, cmbartl@iastate.edu. Questions about the position or the search may be directed to Doug Epperson (dle@iastate.edu), Associate Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; questions about the program may be directed to Tunde Adeleke (tadeleke@iastate.edu), Director, African American Studies Program; and questions about the department may be directed to Doug Bonett (dgbonett@iastate.edu), Chair, Department of Psychology
