Dean & Chief Academic Officer

The Wright Institute invites applications and recommendations for the position of the Dean. Reporting to the President, the Dean is the chief academic officer of the Institute, overseeing the doctoral program in clinical psychology and the master’s program in counseling psychology. The Institute seeks an inspiring, collaborative psychologist who shares the values of the school’s mission and has the proven experience to foster an engaged, intellectual academic community.

The Wright Institute was founded in 1968 in Berkeley, California based on the principles of the distinguished psychologist, Nevitt Sanford, a pioneer in the integration of social issues and clinical psychology. His vision emphasized the role of the clinician in making a difference to society with an emphasis on providing leadership that promotes greater understanding of the diverse society in which we live. Today the Wright Institute enrolls approximately 430 students in its doctoral and masters programs combined.

Primary Responsibility:
Serving as the chief academic officer for the Institute, the Dean’s foremost responsibility is to maintain the highest standards of academic quality in both the Psy.D. and Masters programs.  The Dean oversees approximately 50 faculty members. The Dean must value working across the various faculty groups, respecting diverse theoretical orientations while having the ability to promote a cohesive learning environment.

Additional Functions:
The Dean oversees management practices of the clinical training programs ensuring the highest quality of students’ practica and internships.

The Dean oversees the accreditation process and must ensure curricula and student training meet current accreditation standards and licensing requirements.

The Dean is responsible for working with the Admission’s Office on matters related to student recruitment and retention.

The Dean is expected to fulfill Wright Institute policies and procedures related to student conduct and student rights.

The Dean reports to the President and works with him to carry out institutional long-term goals and day-to-day administrative matters.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will hold a doctorate in psychology from an accredited institution and have significant years of distinguished teaching and administrative experience in higher education. To do this job well, it is crucial that the Dean have knowledge and experience in both the academic and professional practices of psychology.

A deep belief and commitment to the Institute’s mission are essential. Knowledge of program accreditation processes and proficiency in overseeing ongoing assessment of learning outcomes; effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; and a demonstrated commitment to embracing and promoting diversity; a proven capacity to provide leadership that engages the community of students, faculty and staff; and the ability to demonstrate transparency in community matters are central to the position.

Appointment date is July 1, 2012. Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience.
