Director of Counseling & Wellness Services
Art Center College of Design is an international center for art and design education located in the hills above the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. We are an independent, nonprofit, four-year college with an 80-year history of educating aspiring artists and designers in a variety of creative fields. Undergraduate degrees are offered in ten disciplines in addition to four graduate programs, currently at an enrollment of approximately 1600 undergraduate and 100 graduate students. We are currently recruiting for a Director of Counseling & Wellness Services to provide individual counseling to students, promote health and wellness through prevention and educational programming, and serve as an administrator for the counseling and wellness services offered. As the first position of its kind at the College, the Director will evaluate current policies and procedures, as well as create and modify policies as appropriate, in support of developing a holistic approach to meeting the growing mental health and developmental needs of Art Center students.

Qualifications
- A doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology is required; licensure in the State of California required
- Minimum 3 years of experience working in a college environment or with a college-age student population, with preference given to candidates having worked in a small liberal arts or specialized sector of higher education as a director, administrator, or supervisory role of a psychological counseling or wellness center
- Minimum of 3–5 years post-licensure as a practicing psychologist/counselor/therapist
- Experience with or knowledge of facilitating campus-wide health promotion programming and giving presentations on mental health and wellness topics
- Strong leader with proven organizational abilities and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative, team setting
- Self-starter who can recognize the needs of a specialized and unique student population
- Experience and/or familiarity with the unique psychological and developmental needs of military veterans
- Knowledge and adherence to professional standards related to APA and AUCCCD
- Preferred experience working with art and/or design students in a fast-paced, academically rigorous, and competitive environment
- Preferred experience starting/coordinating post-doctorate or LCSW internship program
- Committed to understanding the needs of a diverse population of faculty, staff and students and able to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills
- Strong analytical skills, computer proficiency and demonstrated use of computer applications, database maintenance and web based technology
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends when necessary
Essential Functions
- Promote wellness and regularly assess the mental health and wellness needs of the Art Center student community with attention being paid to specific developmental needs of a culturally diverse campus
- Plan, develop, and implement mental health counseling services for students
- Conduct individualized, comprehensive psychosocial intakes to students who are referred or self-referred to determine specific treatment needs. Such intakes may lead to further neuropsychological testing for students suspected of ADD/ADHD or LDs
- Provide direct individual counseling sessions to students as needed
- Respond to acute student mental health crises that may from time to time involve hospitalization of the student
- Oversee and decide all referrals of students for off-campus consultations, assessments, evaluations, medication evaluation, and treatment recommendations to designated resources
- Administer group-counseling sessions on topics of importance and relevance to Art Center students
- Manage after hour and weekend calls for students in crisis
- Provides crisis consultation to the Dean of Students and other staff as appropriate
- Supervise counseling interns including mandatory weekly clinical supervision
- Plans and implements the Annual Depression, Eating Disorders, Alcohol and Drug Screening programs
- Serve as a coordinator of mental health resources to address campus crises and emergencies that may cause trauma to members of the campus community
- Cooperate with other Student Affairs staff to identify and implement campus-wide programming to promote mental health and personal wellness among students
- Provide professional consultation and/or resources to faculty/staff regarding counseling services and classroom management techniques appropriate for students in crisis and difficult/disruptive students
- Maintain confidential counseling records, prepares annual and semester-by-semester reports, and conducts regular assessments on the effectiveness and use of counseling services
- Create relationships with local community health professionals and organizations, psychiatrists, clinical and counseling psychology training programs, and other appropriate resources in the local Pasadena and greater Los Angeles communities
- Chair the campus-wide Students of Concern Committee and serve on the Campus Safety Committee
Other Duties
- Serve on College-wide committees as assigned by the Dean of Students
- Plan presentations on counseling services and wellness programs for the new student and family orientation programs
- Maintain active professional membership and participation in American Psychological Association, Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors, and other relevant associations
- Office administration including processing check and purchase order requests, creating and posting fliers as needed for announcements and campus events, and communicating announcements, campus events, and external events and activities via Inside Art Center and weekly Dot Life emails
- Collaborate with academic departments and others including but not limited to Faculty Development, Learning Center, Career Development, Admissions, Enrollment Services, Marketing and Communications, the Design Office and Institutional Advancement on programs that enhance the student experience and promote health and wellness
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Students
