Stepping Up to the Plate: Giving Back to the Community

APA 2007 Society for Counseling Psychology (SCP)

Community Engagement Events

Stepping Up to the Plate: Giving Back to the Community is offering multiple opportunities for SCP members to get engaged and make a difference in the city of San Francisco during the Division 2007 APA Convention. Consistent with the convention theme, In Service to Others: Changing Lives via Embracing a Social Justice Agenda, we have arranged volunteer projects, social justice advocacy training, donations, and workshops for several segments of the San Francisco mental health and education community. We are also maintaining a commitment to the community of New Orleans and have arranged several events to continue to publicize the needs of the city as well as contribute to the reconstruction of the mental health services.

  • Information about our community partners
  • Legislative advocacy information and tools for taking action on issues relevant to the San Francisco community (and probably your home community as well!) such as immigration, poverty, violence, HIV, and other issues

Give Back Events Serving the San Francisco Community

One of the goals of the Give Back initiative is to promote community engagement, specifically with communities that have been marginalized in terms of resources. In conjunction with community partners, we have organized a number of continuing education workshops that will be conducted by counseling psychologists attending APA. The following are highlights of the workshops that will be held in conjunction with various San Francisco community partners.

  • Recognizing and coping with secondary trauma – A workshop for Crisis Response Teams working with community violence

  • Clinical practices to better serve Native American communities

  • Issues and interventions for transition to adulthood with urban youth

  • Use of therapeutic games with youth (this workshop accompanies a donation of therapeutic games to be distributed to New Orleans and San Francisco mental health providers)
