Taking Action Against Racism
Welcome to the Society of Counseling Psychology’s website on Taking Action Against Racism (TAAR). Racism has devastating effects on its survivors and perpetrators, and society pays significant costs to the extent that it fails to prevent or redress racism’s harmful effects. I appointed TAAR task forces during my Presidential year (August, 2008-August, 2009) and charged them to locate, develop, or solicit pragmatic strategies for recognizing racism in its various manifestations and to teach us how to resist racism or become anti-racist. The TAAR website was developed in response to my charge.
In my Presidential Address at the American Psychological Association’s Annual Convention, “Taking Action against Racism in a Post-Racism Era,” I provided my rationale for the project . As you tour and hopefully use the many resources and activities developed by the Task Forces on TAAR through media and TAAR in higher education, I hope you will share my view that they have offered you significant tools for healing a chronic societal illness—racism in its various shapes.
