I am honored to again be
nominated by my peers for President of the Society of Counseling
Psychology. My experience with the Society of Counseling Psychology
spans 29 years. Specifically, I have chaired the following Division
17/Society of Counseling Psychology Committees: Awards,
Hospitality Suite, Nominations, Prescription Privileges (Ad-Hoc),
SIGS, and Membership. In addition, I have served as Division
Treasurer, Secretary Pro-Tem, and as a member of the CCPTP Board.
I believe that these experiences have helped prepare me to be
President of our Society.
My career includes work at the Iowa State University Counseling
Center, the Psychology Department at Hood College, and the
Counseling Psychology Programs at Auburn University and The
University of Iowa. I served as Training Director at Auburn and
Iowa for 13 years. I am currently in my 17th year as a
professor at the University of Iowa. I am a Fellow of Division 17
and a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology.
If elected I would have several goals
-
Work within the Society to continue to increase communication,
e.g. regular contact with members via e mail, soliciting their
input, etc.
-
Continue to reach out to groups external to the society.
-
Work to raise national awareness concerning suicide prevention
and suicide education through a variety of initiatives.
-
Continue the already existing long-range planning activities for
the society, designed to examine our current and future identity
and mission.
-
Establish a Special Task Group (STG) to examine the issue of
internship supply/demand, specific to counseling psychology.
Again, I sincerely and humbly thank my peers for this
nomination. I believe I am at a point in my career where I could
both give much to the Society, and gain much from the Society. I
hope to receive those opportunities.
