Statement
I am very honored to have been nominated for the position of Vice
President for Diversity and Public Interest. My commitment to
multicultural issues has become a driving force in both my personal
and professional life over the past 20 years. Counseling psychology
has been a leader in the field in promoting attention to diversity
and multicultural issues and I am proud to be aligned with the
Society in this mission. At the same time, I believe there is much
more work that needs to happen to ensure that diversity and
multicultural issues are viewed as central to our profession, rather
than as an area of specialization for some of us. I believe that
everyone, but especially those of us who have privilege related to
race and ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability,
and so on must be committed to working for change at institutional
and systemic levels to end oppression. I feel that serving in the
office of VP for Diversity and Public Interest would be an important
way for me to further my work in this area. While significant change
has taken place, much more work in terms of public policy and
advocacy needs to be done.
As a White faculty member teaching multicultural counseling, my
strongest efforts are often targeted at White students who need to
become aware of their privilege with regard to race and ethnicity
and their responsibility to work to end oppression in all of its
forms. I am passionate about the work I do with students and would
carry this passion into my work for the Society if elected to this
position as VP of Diversity and Public Interest.
